Cenozoic Evolution of the Sulu Sea Arc‐Basin System: An Overview

چکیده
The Cenozoic Sulu Sea arc-basin system is situated in the tectonic junction between South China (SCS), northern Borneo, Palawan Continental Terrane, Philippine Mobile Belt, and Celebes Sea. We compare new/published geochronological geochemical data from across circum-Sulu region, summarize seven major magmatic phases Middle Eocene to Pleistocene. (42.65 Ma) Sabah ophiolite Eocene-Oligocene (34-33 Central have MORB-IAT-transitional features, representing an intraoceanic subduction setting Paleogene Borneo central-southern Palawan. After SCS opening (∼32 ridge jump (∼25 Ma), late-stage Proto-SCS (24-21 may formed Panay arc andesite BABB magmatism SW Zamboanga peninsula. Starting of final convergence Terrane Borneo-SW Philippines (∼21 likely caused regional uplift/thrusting, forming Top Crocker Unconformity triggering NW-dipping subduction. (21-18 Cagayan its continuation NE Sabah, opened NW back-arc basin through continental crust attenuation. Subduction rollback occurred 17-14 Ma 13-9 Ma, shifting southeast SE basin. largely ceased after ∼9 followed by extension-related uplift/exhumation 4-0.2 intraplate volcanism Borneo. SE-dipping along Negros-Sulu trenches, produced ∼4 Ma.

Dual overflows into the deep Sulu Sea
[1] The Sulu Sea, isolated from the neighboring ocean below 570 m, is nearly isothermal below 1250 m but with a marked salinity increase with depth. The source of the deep Sulu Sea water has been attributed to South China Sea water overflowing the 570 m topographic sill of Panay Strait. However, the Panay overflow (estimated as 0.32 × 10 m/sec) is an unlikely source for the saltier water Sulu S...

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

[1] The velocity and transport, with thermohaline properties, are determined from simultaneous moored time series within Mindoro, Tablas and Panay Straits that connect the South China Sea (SCS) and Sibuyan Sea to the Sulu Sea. These passages provide the only pathway for the SCS throughflow below thermocline depths and play a critical role in regulating the heat and freshwater balance within the...
